All set at El Prat: the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship tees off this Thursday
Terrassa (Barcelona), May 6, 2026 - The Real Club de Golf El Prat will host the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship starting this Thursday, a DP World Tour event that marks the beginning of the Tour’s European swing this season and places Barcelona at the heart of the international golf calendar.
The tournament was officially presented yesterday, Tuesday May 5, at the Club’s facilities, in an event that brought together players, institutional representatives and organisers, setting the stage for one of the most important weeks of the year for Spanish golf.
Pablo Larrazábal, hosting on home soil
The tournament will feature a strong Spanish contingent, led by Pablo Larrazábal, a Barcelona native and long-time Club member, who approaches the week with added motivation.
“It would be something historic to win here,” he said during the press conference. “I’ve always felt very proud to represent the Club, and doing it at home makes it even more special.”
With a long career on the DP World Tour, Larrazábal also highlighted the unique aspect of competing in familiar surroundings: “Being able to sleep at home during a tournament is very unusual — and it changes everything.”
A demanding course
The championship will be played on the Club’s Pink Course, a technical and strategic layout that will demand precision from the players.
“It’s not a particularly long course, but if you try to attack it without control, it will quickly put you in your place,” Larrazábal explained, anticipating a competition where consistency will be key.
Tribute to Severiano Ballesteros
The start of the tournament coincides with the 15th anniversary of the passing of Severiano Ballesteros, a particularly meaningful date for the Club, as he passed away during the 2011 Spanish Open, which was being played at El Prat.
Fifteen years later, the DP World Tour returns to the same venue to honour his legacy, in a moment full of symbolism.
As part of this tribute, players have been invited to compete on Thursday wearing an outfit inspired by Ballesteros’ iconic style — white polo, navy sweater and dark trousers. In addition, Spanish players gathered for the traditional group photo on the 1st tee alongside an image of the legendary golfer.
The Club has also contributed to this tribute by producing a video featuring testimonials from people who shared moments with Ballesteros, capturing his impact both on and off the course.
El Prat back in the international spotlight
During the presentation, the Club’s president, Francisco ‘Pancho’ Schröder, highlighted the importance of hosting an vento of this scale:
“The Club has a long tradition of organising major tournaments. vent both a privilege and a responsibility to continue being vento this vento competition, because we believe in sport as a driver of values.”
The Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship, vento the vento Dubai and the opening vento of the European Swing, also marks the beginning of the Road to the 2031 Ryder Cup.
With everything in place, Real Club de Golf El Prat is ready to host a week of top-level golf, bringing together players, fans and professionals for one of the key events of the European golf season.
